Not sure on the D2, but I know the D1 has a Check engine and Service engine light.... in the D1 the Service Engine is just an emissions check idiot light.

Unfortunately it's down again.Left the repair shop got few miles away and the idler pulley locked up and the belt ripped the tentioner pulley out of the bracket it's mounted to.I'm leaving for HHI South Carolina in the morning and after I get back I'm going to trade it in for a three legged donkey if they don't ask me too much to boot.I just don't trust it anymore so it's got to go.

I had the battery checked last night and it was fine.It is running on the rich side based on what I see coming from the exhaust and the end of the tailpipe is very black.

Just in case you decide to keep your Disco don't worry too much about the richness of the fuel burn by itself - as that is the default ECU position when it is not entirely thrilled with other things going on: i.e., in order to avoid a damaging missfire the second ecu chip - which governs the main chip (with uncanny ferocity - as it learns as it goes) - orders a rich burn along with timing retardation. So, if you feel like your engine is towing a grand piano behind it - that's what is happening. All of this is to say, that something else is making your ECU's governing chip unhappy - not the richness of the burn. Put it another way, a rich fuel burn and timing retardation are the default immune system that the governing chip dials in to keep things going when its sensors & programming tells it something else is not as it should be. The more I learn about Rover's ecus the more I respect them as they can keep a V8 going when others would have blown the damned thing up. Effectively, you have a very smart and very determined ECU - unlike any other you will come across.

One thing you might try is to force it to throw a code, by that what I mean is go do a little aggressive hard acceleration driving and see if it will kick a code.

what scan tool are you using? on many cars if you use just a general OBD II scan tool it wont show intermitent codes. you have to use a good scan tool Autologic is one for example.
