Gas cap making service engine soon go on

Hi guy new here with this 2001 Disco II , the service engine soon light is on all the time and according to the mechanic after testing it the reason is the gas cap ,the manuel mentions something about this too , is anyone ever had this problem?? just buying another gas cap will be ok ?? and to reset the computer to make this "service engine go off" will I need to disconect the negative from the battery like other vehicles ?? any coments will help ..Thanks

it is possible the cap is itself defective, in this case a new one would solve your problem. if you have a mechanic that can read the error code, just have them erase it, because just disconnecting the battery usually does not solve the issue--at least in any of my cases it didnt help, had to clear it with OBDII scanner, no big deal. caps are like 30 bux from www.britishpacific.com, but look around, let us know what happens

I have seen the SES light come on due to the gas cap. If you don't tighten it enough clicks, it will not hold pressure. Or it could be a faulty gas cap.
