Just ordered this, haven’t inspected anything but I am getting a distinct smell of fuel. The gasket was $10 and the cover piece was $50 from rock auto. That should be it? I’ll drop the tank in the garage, not looking forward to it but not anything I haven’t done before.

Just wanted to update, my truck looks like it has the “updated” design, but still failed. If I have to do it again, I want to do it on a lift or a bigger garage, but it’s an easy job.

I don’t know if its mentioned in this thread anyplace, but there is an open investigation by the NHTSA on the earlier design in the 2011 cars. https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2011/LAND%2520ROVER/LR4/SUV/4WD#recalls.

Might want to report this to Land Rover and maybe NHTSA so they know the updated designs are still failing. I believe there have been fires relating to this issue.

2014 LR4 with 75k miles checking in. Fuel smell after driving. No codes no check engine light.

Will be replacing the parts noted here in this thread.

Alright- got around to fixing this today. My 2014 also had the “updated” design and was faulty.

I had a similar issue. I would smell gas also only outside. Finally found that the fuel rail connection was melted. Apparently the fuel rail and the transmission hose share a clip together because both are right by the exhaust under the car right around where the gear shifter is inside then under that outside under the truck. I was also getting a gearfault. I had to replace the rail hose and put the clips holding the fuel and trans hose together away from the exhaust. Before fuel was actually leaking right on the exhaust that is right in the area . The red Clío had melted since the clip holding both hoses was not properly installed See pictures

That’s seriously clean there Louis. Glad you caught this before it went up. I’ll check mine this week. Thanks for putting this one out there.

Well, thanks to the search function, we can add another one to the list. 2013 LR4 100k miles and getting the gas smell (progressively stronger) near the rear passenger tire. Really starting to get irritated with the cost of owning this vehicle. Just went through the entire water pump issue and sunroof rails then did the 100k mile service and new tires (which is unfortunate timing and LR specific), but yessh...starting to not be worth it.

Has anyone recently (like this year) had this done at a dealer and have an idea of what i'm up against? Realize it was $400 - $600 a couple years ago, but prices aren't going down.

The part from the dealer is $120-140, and I’d reckon 4 hours book time. My local dealer is $199 an hour.

This happened recently to my RRS. Labor intensive $$$ to find out what really the issue was (thought originally emissions control went kaput), get down the tank and putting it back together. First time this happens to me for any vehicle I have owned. My mechanic suspects that extreme changes in temperatures could affect the seal over time. He had another RRS while repairing mine with the same gas smell problem. I hope I have no issues on this regards in the future with my LR4.
