I recently replaced my battery after receiving a few low battery warnings and decided to upgrade to an H8 from the factory H7 size. Overall this is a simple battery swap, but I wanted to include the steps to update the Car Configuration File (CCF) and reset the Battery Management System (BMS), along with resetting the power windows and sunroof.

Batteries
  • (old) CarQuest Gold 94RH7 CCA 800 CA 1000 RC 140 (LxWxH) 12.5" x 6.8" x 7.4"
  • (new) Bosch Premium H8-900B CCA 900 CA 1080 RC 185 (LxWxH) 14" x 6.87" x 7.43"

Tools
  • Ratchet (1/4 or 3/8)
  • Ratchet Extension
  • 8mm Socket (battery clamp bolts)
  • 10mm Socket (battery terminal nuts)
  • (optional) IIDTool

Steps

1. (Optional) Fully charge the new battery, mine took around 24hrs with a 12V 1.25A charger

2. Remove battery cover and battery clamp

3. Disconnect battery vent

4. Disconnect battery terminals and remove battery

5. Install new battery, reconnect vent, terminals and clamp

6. (optional) Update the battery type in the CCF using IIDTool

Car Config > BCM-Body Control > Battery Type (H8HD 90Ah 950 cold cranking ampere)

7. (optional) Reset the BMS

Service/Test > BCM-Body Control > Battery Replacement

8. (optional) Reset automatic power windows (auto up) and sunroof, I also had to reset the date, time, and temperature settings (C/F).

Awesome post - thanks for the writeup and photos! When the current H7 dies in our LR4, I plan to replace it with an H8 AGM.

I recently replaced my battery after receiving a few low battery warnings and decided to upgrade to an H8 from the factory H7 size.

When I did my new battery install this past weekend, I re-used the vent plug from the old battery. Just did a very basic yank and swap.

This post reminded me that the new battery came with a plastic pouch attached to the side with a new vent tip. Sure enough I just went out, popped my hood and felt around the back of the new battery and that pouch was still there. Now it's with my other Rover miscellany in the garage.

Any reason I should have used the new tip? Do the vented gasses leave any residue that might have clogged the old one. I suppose I should just change it out.

Thanks for posting this. I just replaced my battery with an H8 AGM and followed your instructions on the iid tool. Best I can tell it’s a happy Landry now!

Good write up. When did H7 become stock as every battery I have replaced has been an H8. Perhaps LR spec'd a different battery for Canada?

Good write-up, thanks. Wasn't sure that the H8 would fit, but it seems like it went in with no issues.

If you don't reset the bar for the new type, what happens? Isn't it just happy to get ~12V or is it smart enough to know there are different discharge curves for different batteries and it adjusts charging and low batter warnings accordingly.

Can this be done on the LR3 as well?

I installed a odyssey pc1500 to the auxiliary tray to power up several things including my air compressor and fridge. I didn't linked that battery to the starting battery as I opted to use a dc to dc battery charger instead of a dual battery set up as its commonly done. Depending on the year of the vehicle you might have to change the parameters in the diagnostic tool. But I would stick to the same ratings for your truck. Anything higher is bound to create a few problems and possibly an expensive electrical repair. Intend to replace the starting battery with a odyssey pc1750 but I wouldn't go anything higher than

that battery.
