2016 LR4 3.0SC HD Luxury with 80k miles.

I just picked this up against my better judgment. I've been out of the Land Rover game for awhile. It needs the rear crossover replaced so I need to tear into it.

I'm posting a long video of the engine sounds because It's just sounds like crap. Runs and drive great with no codes however. The serp belt for the supercharger is removed for this video.

I plan to replace the entire cooling system, check all the tensioners, replace belts, rebuild supercharger and thinking about the timing chains since I'll be that far into it.

I did replace the sunroof drains, cowl and did the update on the A pillars since I had the parts from my last LR4 and this one did have a crapped out drain.

I'd like opinions on whether or not it sound so bad that I should dump it, rather than put a bunch of money into it. I'm thinking about $3k for the timing and cooling stuff. I already have the tools.

From your recording all I hear are high pressure fuel pumps, and pulleys and tensioners. I don't understand the problem. I am assuming you are using the right grade oil and you don't go long between changes.

My 2015 LR4 HSE Lux with 128,000 miles sounds the same. No codes and accelerates fine. I got all the maintenance records with mine and the oil was changed every 5,000 miles so I think it was well taken care of.

I replaced my radiator (it had a small leak), all the coolant hoses, belts and tensioners and installed a new cooling fan because I damaged it while removing it. The most difficult part was removing the radiator without disturbing the A/C radiator, the intercooler radiator and the power steering cooler.

The thermostat had been replaced but what I discovered is the anytime there is a plastic pipe with an O-Ring snap in connector, there is a high probability it will leak once taken part. I replaced mine because the old one did leak after I put it together. Also use only spring hose clamps. Never use worm gear hose clamps.

I also replaced all the power steering hoses because the metal was rusted on them but there were no leaks.

Your front coolant pipes look like the new version without the seam. Both front pipes and water pump had already been replaced on mine.

But my rear coolant pipe is leaking. I just started to work on that yesterday. I'm trying to replace it without touching the supercharger. I am going to work on it this weekend to see how far I get.

No running problems other than I need to change the rear crossover pipe, its been leaking around the seam. It sounds like a diesel and I'm not sure if I'm hearing chains or not. I definitely hear the fuel pump/injector clatter. I'm going to just go through it and replace the cooling system, rebuild the supercharger snout and replace any bad tensioner pulleys but I am thinking about doing the chains as well since I'll be most of the way there.

Sounds normal to me. These are very loud engines. I'm assuming an original supercharger spring isolator? Upgrade to a Eaton solid isolator will help a little.

Sounds like there is a gnarly metallic knock on the drivers side. Is the noise coming from the top or bottom of the engine?

Well... the previous chains and guides were known to prematurely wear. It didn't help that in the beginning some were waiting to 15k before performing their oil change.
On your engine, the chains are improved, the guides are improved, the oil spec changed and provided the oil was changed more frequently they should be in good shape.

When they get really noisy it is probably time to look at them... unless the money is burning a hole in your pocket ;-)

Sounds the same as mine - 2010 RRS V8 w/300k miles, 2013 LR4 V8 w/new chains, 2017 RRS 3.0, 2018 RRS 3.0, 2019 RRS 3.0. They're just noisy engines. Oil change is key and there are some threads discussing the merits of 5W-30 vs 0W-20. I've stayed with OW-20. Also a thread on noisy idler pulleys. I plan to change mine as I service belts.

the 5W-30 vs 0W-20 debate is a tough one. Im about to cross 190K on my 2013 and going to 5w-30 in metro nyc area seems like a no brainer

Hard not to think if all these cars had 5w-30 from day 1 they wld have done much better with the riduculous 15K intervals that they were calling for in those days.

The noise in the beginning sounds like pulley noise. I had a D5 that made a similar noise and the noise would come and go. It ended up being the pulley on the upper RH side of the engine.

Take a look at this video
