Here's the deal,
I would like to get a set of tyres that can handle mud etc better but would like to mount them on some cool looking classic style rims. There is a guy up here in Canada the has some old steel defender wheels as well as some Range Rover Classic steel rims and some 5 spoke steel wheels (I don't know what type of vehicle those are off).

The rims are all 16" with 5x6.5 bolt pattern the only difference (other than looks) is the width...
Apparently
the Defender rims are 5.5" wide
the RRC rims are 6" wide and
the 5 spoke unknowns are 7" wide.

I was hoping to put something like 255/80-16 rubber on them but don't know if those width rims will work with that tyre size.

Anyone here know if they would work? Or if there is an 'optimum' size rim width for tyres that size?

Thanks,
Shawn

BTW: I tried the search first and came up empty handed. Sorry if this is covered somewhere else on this site.

If you go to the B.F.Goodrich web site and get the specs on thier MT or AT tires. They will pop up a pdf file that gives you tire sizes and optimal wheel widths.
I would think no matter what brand you get the information would transfer.

Shawn, I agree with Walter, and I am pretty sure you are going to want to stay in the 8" wheel for that size tire.

Thanks VERY much, that was exactly what I was after.

Quote from the BF Goodrich MT tire pdf....

Tire Size ----------- Rim Width ------- Dia.

LT245/75R16/E ----- 6.5 - 7.5 --------- 30.7
LT255/70R16/D ----- 6.5 - 8.0 --------- 30.3
LT255/85R16/D ----- 6.5 - 8.0 --------- 33.3
LT265/75R16/D ----- 7.0 - 8.0 --------- 31.9
LT285/75R16/D ----- 7.5 - 9.0 --------- 33.1

So my new question is... Do you know which of the above tyres will work on a stock 96 disco? I don't want to cut fenders or do a suspension lift etc (at least not yet).

BFG Does not make a MT in the 255/80R16 size. They do however make a 255/70R16 (30.3" x 10.2") and a 255/85R16 (33.3" x 10"). Both these tires will fit on a 6.5" - 8" Rim.

You might be able to fit:
LT255/70R16/D ----- 6.5 - 8.0 --------- 30.3

Usually you can fit a 29.5 tire with a little trimming. I imagine if you got a 1" spacer lift you could run the 255/70s no problem.

If you don't want to make any changes, I believe 245's are as large as you can go and I have heard somepeople say they had to adjust the stops and or trim a little with these.

Mike,

John down at EE told me that I would need at least Light Duty front and Medium rears for 245s.

Here are two examples of OME MD Springs and 245s, the latter with D2 Flares:

<edit> these are linked off DWeb so you may have to hit reload on your browser once or twice for these to work.
