Hello I'm new here looking for advice!
tires need to be replaced asap on my 2013 LR4. Currently they are stock 20" rims with Perelli road tires.

I would prefer 18-19" and AT tires. nothing crazy, but just to visit the mountains and do a bit of overlanding... interested in a Baja style 18x8 steel (lucky 8 or similar) OR compomotive

or used 19" landcover stock black wheels

is it true I can't go over 31" without installing lift kits and spacers and such?

I would love any and all expert advice for how to best modify. Thank you!

You should start with a search. All of your questions have been covered a lot in this forum.

Search for "compomotive," "tuffant," "evo corse," and "alpha." Those are the 18-inch wheel options if you don't want to use spacers.

I just went through all this. I think first you should decide if spacers are acceptable. Next you should decide if you're OK with steel or the lighter Compos, Alphaequipts, or Evos. And if you're into black 19s, I'll have a set for sale soon. :)

thank you CRYA, I'm not sure if I want spacers. what is their purpose, (break clearance?) do they affect the vehicle, suspension and the way it will drive?

Much depends on what you are wanting the ability to do, but the suggestion that you start with a search on here is a good one. The topics of wheel size, tire size, wheel/tire size...and fit, are well covered on here (ad nauseam). There are many AT, MT or AT/MT Hybrid tire options for 18" and 20" discussed, not as many for 19"s but getting better.
If you're willing to incur the cost of going to 18" wheels, that's about half of the battle. Although you'll find that 'max tire size' with very little or no mods, and having a truck that's still able to roll if the EAS completely fails, you come to about the same place. The sweet spot seems to be about 30.5"- IE:
265-50-20 vs 265-60-18 = same size =30.5". Any wider can create more challenges. There's also your 'spare' to consider.

It is possible to run bigger tires on the existing 20s, it all depends on the offset of the 20s as this will determine whether the tire rubs the frame horns, etc. On mine, I run 275 55 20s, which equates to 31.9 in. This is with stock Range Rover Supercharged(L322) wheels and no lift/spacers. The tires are at their limit with very mild rubbing, but otherwise work fine.

There are 2 kinds of spacers, and you need to figure out which ones you are talking about.

There are is the Lucky 8 SYA kit, that puts spacers above the air struts and gives you a permanent 2" lift. The benefit of this is that you can run a tire larger than 31.5" if something terrible happens to the air suspension and it drops to the bumpstops, as the bumpstops are now 2" taller.

There are also wheel spacers. These allow you to run 18" wheels off an LR3 or the Lucky8 steel wheels without having to grind the hell out of your brake calipers.

Thank you for this info! I was referring to wheel spacers - wondering if I buy a wheel that requires spacers vs. a wheel that doesn’t, and how that may change things

I think that tire size looks proper and very good on a 19inch wheel. Out of curiosity, did you try to fit it without the SYA kit? I am wondering how much they actually rub, if it's manageable or undriveable. 31.xx seems to be the limit for unlifted LR4s but i always wonder.
