Mine looked like it was pressed in 4 spots, I simply drilled through those and wedged a flathead in to crack it open. How did you open that thing? If I remember correctly it was spot welded shut.
I bought an aftermarket one off amazon and after a couple days the tire fell off, fortunately it was in the driveway not doing 70 on the freeway. The bracket at the end of the cable fell apart.
Decided to just buy the expensive one for peace of mind.
Hopefully I have better luck with the aftermarket one, it looks to be the upgraded design.Could you rebuild the stock winch, maybe with synthetic winch rope?
I have seen that some people have opted to the separate pan and filter vs the built in unit that ZF sells. I'll have to do some more digging to see where I can source them as the two part ones on FCP are OOS. Also thought I can use my ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid that I already have but it turns out that I need to use the ZF LG6 fluid.Get the separate trans pan and filter. Will make changing it much easier. Search here and youtube for videos on doing it.
Thanks for the link ryanjl! This is a fantastic thread, I love how everyone had put their 2c in along the way - I read almost all 20 pages of it so far. Coincidentally, RMEuropean is a mile away from me, what a score, they have ZF ATF6 for $15/L, so far the best price ive seen and with local pickup makes it even a sweeter deal. I'll have to order the parts and tackle the project in the next couple of weeks, I can feel the transmission a tiny bit jerky at times, this should smooth things out.You can try Atlantic British. There are other sources in this thread (which more or less pioneered the use of the part on the LR4).
LR4 Transmission Fluid Change: Pan Swap Option
Gang, After searching around the web, I have been finding fragmented info about a work around for the LR4 transmission pan removal- one that does not involve removing the cross-member and other cumbersome components. So far I have come up with: 1. The plastic factory pan is loosened, and the...www.landroverworld.org
The Atlantic British replacement kit works great...just need time, patience, and a set of 4 ramps to lift the entire vehicle up (or a hoist). You can try Atlantic British. There are other sources in this thread (which more or less pioneered the use of the part on the LR4).

I'm definitely going to invest in 4x ramps, I've become quite intimate with the underside of this LR4 so far but If I could spare myself from getting a trans fluid bath, it'll be well worth the investment. The Atlantic British replacement kit works great...just need time, patience, and a set of 4 ramps to lift the entire vehicle up (or a hoist).
I've done the job a couple of times and it really isn't that bad...4-5 hour job and then half a bottle of shampoo to get the ATF out of my hair.
