Could you rebuild the stock winch, maybe with synthetic winch rope?

How did you open that thing? If I remember correctly it was spot welded shut.

I bought an aftermarket one off amazon and after a couple days the tire fell off, fortunately it was in the driveway not doing 70 on the freeway. The bracket at the end of the cable fell apart.

Decided to just buy the expensive one for peace of mind.

Mine looked like it was pressed in 4 spots, I simply drilled through those and wedged a flathead in to crack it open.

Here's the wire spool with the kink visible, note the chunks of sand that came out along with it. The spool is channeled specifically for the braided wire, I don't think there's a way to put a nylon style rope on here as it's not a winch in a traditional sense. I tried to Mcgiver it by cutting off the kinked section of wire (approx 5 inches) and tried to put it all back together but the mechanism is so worn out that it couldn't pull the spare tire up.

Hopefully I have better luck with the aftermarket one, it looks to be the upgraded design.

Well crap, I thought the ATF fluid used on this transmission is ZF8 where in fact its ZF6, I guess I wont get to use all that ZF8 fluid I have sitting around.
Get the separate trans pan and filter. Will make changing it much easier. Search here and youtube for videos on doing it.
I have seen that some people have opted to the separate pan and filter vs the built in unit that ZF sells. I'll have to do some more digging to see where I can source them as the two part ones on FCP are OOS. Also thought I can use my ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid that I already have but it turns out that I need to use the ZF LG6 fluid.

You can try Atlantic British. There are other sources in this thread (which more or less pioneered the use of the part on the LR4).

Thanks for the link ryanjl! This is a fantastic thread, I love how everyone had put their 2c in along the way - I read almost all 20 pages of it so far. Coincidentally, RMEuropean is a mile away from me, what a score, they have ZF ATF6 for $15/L, so far the best price ive seen and with local pickup makes it even a sweeter deal. I'll have to order the parts and tackle the project in the next couple of weeks, I can feel the transmission a tiny bit jerky at times, this should smooth things out.

The Atlantic British replacement kit works great...just need time, patience, and a set of 4 ramps to lift the entire vehicle up (or a hoist).

I've done the job a couple of times and it really isn't that bad...4-5 hour job and then half a bottle of shampoo to get the ATF out of my hair.

I'm definitely going to invest in 4x ramps, I've become quite intimate with the underside of this LR4 so far but If I could spare myself from getting a trans fluid bath, it'll be well worth the investment.

Couple of updates: The LR4 is at the paint shop getting the bumper and quarter panel fixed and painted.

In the meantime I received the suggested trans pan kit with the removable filter and steel pan from British Atlantic - pleasantly surprised how beefy this thing is. Also received the aftermarket spare tire holder, this thing feels super flimsy, ill be returning it.

Luckily, a Land Rover sport and and LR3 showed up at my local LKQ, I pulled a genuine LR tire holder, LR roof rack and LR cross bars and driver side armrest all for $95! So pumped about my haul, didn't realize until later that the roof kit alone would cost in excess of $800
