The idea is to catch an overheating situation before the factory gauge even indicates a problem. Since the "everything is ok" range on the factory gauge is too broad, the actual coolant temp is great to have.

That being said, I can't imagine it will help much in the event of sudden total coolant loss, but it doesn't hurt to have.

The two things I keep an eye on now days are coolant temp and voltage, Vegas gets a little hot and this allows me to keep an eye on things.

If you're really worried about it, wouldn't it be better to put a moisture alarm and sensors near those crossovers? Might trigger false alarms in river crossings and such, but...
