I have a 2000 DII with little over 120,000km that has at least the upper ball joint shot on one side so my assumption is that I would change both at the same time.

How big a job is this going to be to do it myself - reasonable DIY experience and tools. Will I be able to get the ball joints out without all the fancy rover tools mentioned in the workshop manual?

Any thoughts would be helpful!

Shouldn't be too hard, but I would have a pickle tool as it does help make it much easier.

Crash, how do you know the top ball joint is bad, that is pretty rare, normally if one is failing it would be a lower ball?

It is possible that it is actually the lower one but the noise and "squeaking" does appear to be coming from the upper. I checked it out pretty carefully.

Is it prudent to change both once it is all apart?

Have the rave manual. Parts arrived and I am going to get to this next week.

The manual highlights a number of special rover tools and what I was looking for is info on using alternatives.

I have a C-clamp style of ball joint remover that looks like it will work but if anyone has specific advice on other non-rover tools for this job please let me know.
