OK!

AB does not have the 5w20 Castrol Professional (OE) in stock and they are saying it could be 3 months or more.
(Yes, apparently it is available on ebay, but at $80/qt that's not happening.)

SO....

Best Castrol alternative at this time?
Edge
Edge Extended Performance
Edge Euro Car

Keeping in mind that yes, we have all read the posts and likely commented on this before, and that I am not as liberal in my oil substitutions as some...

AND. My local dealership tells me that the specification for the 2013 has changed and they now sell and use 0-20 Castrol Edge Professional (OE) in the V8 - comments?

As far as I am aware, my post here in the big oil change thread is still current:

Since it seems like there are some new forum members who likely want to know about oil, here's the collective knowledge in this thread (I think; others can feel free to modify):

1. If you change your oil every 6k to 7.5k miles, any quality full synthetic will probably be okay.

2. Land Rover's original spec is really only achievable through the Gucci Castrol (available from your dealer, Atlantic British, and a few other places), and maybe Ravenol and Motul. An online search says that Mobil 1 Extended Performance can meet this spec, too, but there's been some debate.

3. If you go by the research that says the Land Rover spec has been superseded, then that opens up a few more oil options for you.

4. Supernerds like myself buy expensive oil (I use Motul) and change it every 6k to 7.5k miles regardless.

5. The original spec in the 5.0 engines at least was 5w-20. Land Rover now specs 0w-20 in its newer engines, and will use that oil if you take your LR4 into the dealer for an oil change. Most here (I think) still prefer to use the 5w-20.

If you are still under warranty and really worried about this, I bought my LR4 back in January 2016 with around 40k miles on it. It had a CPO warranty on it. I believe it had dealer service before then. I changed the oil every 6.5k miles or so with Mobil 1 EP. In December 2018 at around 80k miles, my CPO warranty covered the timing chain & guides replacement, and my dealer didn't question me at all on what oil I was using. Your experience may vary. Since then, however, I've been using Motul as I'm now on my dime for anything that goes wrong.

Bottom line is the rare Castrol Oil is the only one that officially, on its face meets the original Land Rover spec for certain. Ravenol and Motul and maybe Mobil 1 meet it if you do some research.

The Spec is only about extended drains. Eons ago Mobil1 had a statement on their extended performance oil that it met Ford 925 but not anymore. That spec is obsolete anyhow. Quality synthetic oil and change at 5k miles. Done.

FWIW I do overkill and run Mobil extended performance at 5k intervals lol. I get it for around $6-7 Cdn/litre Canadian. $5 US/L

Thanks everyone, didn't mean to whack the hornets nest....

Here is a bit more for those (like me) hung up on the specification...

I did find on a Blauparts page that the STJLR.03.5003 specification "will always correspond to an ACEA A5/B5 specification" "Also, the original STJLR.03.5003 specification may have referenced the ACEA A1/B1 specification. This is now obsolete and has been updated and replaced by ACEA A5/B5."
https://www.blauparts.com/blog/land-rover-engine-oil-types.html

The Ravenol site has a good discussion of the ACEA specification itself.

On my bottle of Castrol Professional OE, (purchased Spring 2021 from AB), I do not in fact find the JLR specification but I do find ACEA A1/B1.

I did a quick look see and I find that the ACEA A1/B1 or A5/B5 specification is indeed available but one needs to check the individual brand, type, and viscosity because it's not universal:

SOME Mobile 1

SOME Pennzoil
(scroll to the bottom, select each type, then select specifications)

Could not find a Ravenol page, but all the Ravenol's listed at Blauparts.

No Royal Purple that I could find.

SOME Quaker State, not ACEA A1/B1 or A5/B5, only other ACEA specifications.

Does it though we are talking about the original 925 spec...Does the new JLR spec supersede it?

It supposedly does, if I recall correctly. Buried in that big oil thread I linked above I think there is some discussion of it.

FCP Euro, Lifetime warranty. For the last 40K miles, my oil changes only cost me $18 every 5K miles (8 oil changes @ $18ea). Not sure how much cheaper and easier it could be. They carry the JLR Spec Castrol Professional E
