Well the wife has been pushing me to buy a new jeep, something I have always wanted and dreamed about owning until I drove a few the other day to only realize I am older, spoiled and love my LR4. I still have my LR3 and wife's RR so the struggle wouldn't be as bad BUT I love this LR4. I decided to just take her down and have the timing system replaced, all cooling components, pcv valves replaced and anything else they find. one of those $$$$ days but slot cheaper then $45k.

We have an LR3 and RR as well and my wife keeps wanting a Jeep as a potential summer convertible replacement, but it's hard to justify the price these days. Even if they have made all the improvments with the JL, it is still a relatively "crude machine" when compared to Land Rovers. I think I would rather spend half the price on a restored classic Bronco or Scout or something and at least have some cool factor for some summer air...

I had a 71' Bronco, picked it up for free in 92' and converted everything over to full disc brakes and power steering , removed three on the tree to AOD for the overdrive. Around 05' a person made me an offer I could not resist and I let her go. It was fun and my boys loved it especially when I picked them up at school lol. The only thing is no chicks ever checked me out, it was the guys lol starring me down at the lights...

It might be hard to stomach the price for a new Jeep until you look at how low the depreciation is. Pay a lot up front, and get a lot in return when you sell. It's really kind of astonishing, when you consider how many Wranglers are sold. But I guess that's what happens when a car company figures out what a good chunk of the population actually wants.

Jeep is killing it with the new Wrangler and Gladiator, especially when the diesel hits the market; they're pretty much what I wish Land Rover had done with the new Defender. I can spec either of those Jeeps with the creature comforts I actually want (leather, heated seats and steering, etc.) and be happy as a clam with the sole exception of seeing my twin on every-other street corner. Yeah, they will ride rougher, but I can also fit 35" tires on it without it being the internet event of 2019.

^ This. Amazing how one team of strategic planners 'gets it' and the other completely misses the value equation that actually drives sales.

The new JL is pretty nice. What amazes me is that the older JK's are still worth a lot for how old they are. I thought that with the Pentastar engine in 2012(?) the early ones would lose value. Nope. Surely the all-new JL would make values of JK's plummet. Nope. It's crazy. Reliability isn't great either.

In January 2016 I traded my 2013 JKU in on my 2012 LR4. At the time, the Jeep trade-in was about 70% of the LR4's cost.

Now, according to KBB, that same Jeep is worth about 25 to 40% more than my LR4.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I think Jeep dealers discount the prices of their vehicles a lot more than Land Rover dealers do, probably in part because there are so many more Jeep dealers competing with one-another. Hell, I live in Kansas City, which has a population of around 2.2 million, and there's only one Land Rover dealer. The next closest one is probably in Wichita or Omaha, but Land Rover does territories, meaning the Wichita or Omaha dealership couldn't sell me a new vehicle.

There are at least 5 Jeep dealerships within a 30 minute drive of my house.

Sounds like Vegas, one LR dealer and half a dozen Jeep dealers. If and I do mean IF I decide to buy a Jeep it’ll be loaded and on sale like holiday sales.

Was your LR4 making timing chain noise or you just did it preemptively?

After reading and seeing the videos I became paranoid lol, at cold start up it sounds normal ZERO noise, no metallic ticking or anything but after driving around and say run inside the store it would have this loud clanking for a few minutes then goes away. It ran perfect so yes preemptively.
