I did it on jack stands and it wasn't bad at all.

I did mine on jack stands with zero issues. This is the easiest way to separate the axles.

Dan, thank you for the video! I was having a hard time with my pickle fork (it bent before the ball joint moved), and searched a good bit for a separator - I just don't like hammering on things, seems uncivilized and a last resort. I found one that worked really well for me: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09CT1XTK9

I had tried the one from Harbor Freight before, but it was too narrow to get around the ball joint shaft at the boot side. This one has different "saddles" and the 31mm one fit easily and got the job done quickly.
